Wrong Reasons Why People Marry

Posted on July 5, 2026July 5, 2026 harun By harun

Marriage is one of the most important decisions a person will ever make. It is a lifelong covenant designed by God to reflect love, faithfulness, companionship, and mutual commitment. Because marriage is so significant, the reasons for entering it matter greatly.

Many marriages struggle or even fail because they were built on the wrong foundation. Feelings change, circumstances shift, and appearances fade. If marriage is based on the wrong motives, the relationship may become difficult to sustain when challenges arise.

Below are some of the wrong reasons people marry and why these motives often lead to disappointment.

1. Marrying Because of Physical Beauty or Handsomeness

Physical attraction is important, but it should never be the primary reason for marriage. Beauty fades with time, age, sickness, and life’s challenges. A marriage built only on outward appearance often struggles when physical changes occur.

The Bible reminds us: “Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.” — Proverbs 31:30 (KJV)

God values character above appearance, and so should we.

2. Marrying for Money

Some people marry hoping to gain financial security or enjoy a luxurious lifestyle. While financial stability is beneficial, wealth cannot guarantee happiness, peace, or faithfulness.

Money may disappear through business losses, unemployment, or economic hardship. If wealth was the foundation of the marriage, love may disappear with it.

3. Marrying Because of Pressure from Family or Society

Many people marry because relatives constantly ask, “When are you getting married?” Others feel embarrassed because their friends have already married.

Marriage should never be entered merely to satisfy public expectations. A lifetime commitment should not be made to silence temporary criticism.

4. Marrying Out of Loneliness

Loneliness can make a person desperate for companionship. However, marriage does not automatically solve emotional emptiness.

Someone who has not learned to find contentment in God may still feel lonely even while living with a spouse.

Healthy marriages are formed by two emotionally healthy individuals, not by two people expecting each other to fill every emotional void.

5. Marrying Because of an Unplanned Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a serious matter, but it should not force two incompatible people into marriage.

Parents should take responsibility for raising their child, but marriage should only happen if there is genuine love, commitment, and compatibility.

Many rushed marriages begin under pressure and later suffer because the couple never truly prepared for life together.

6. Marrying to Escape Problems at Home

Some people view marriage as an escape from difficult parents, poverty, strict guardians, or family conflict.

Unfortunately, marriage introduces its own responsibilities and challenges. Running away from one problem may simply lead into another.

Marriage should be entered because someone has found the right partner—not because they want to escape their current circumstances.

7. Marrying to Change Someone

Some believe they can reform an irresponsible, abusive, dishonest, or unfaithful partner after marriage. This is a dangerous assumption.

Marriage magnifies existing habits more often than it removes them. Lasting change comes from personal conviction and God’s transforming power, not from a wedding ceremony nor living together as couple.

8. Marrying Because Everyone Else Is Doing It

Peer pressure affects adults just as much as young people. Seeing classmates, friends, or siblings marry can create unnecessary anxiety. People begin to feel left behind and rush into relationships.

God’s timing is different for every individual. Waiting for the right person is wiser than rushing into the wrong marriage.

9. Marrying for Social Status

Some people marry into influential families, famous names, or respected communities hoping to improve their own reputation.

Status may impress society, but it cannot create love, trust, or commitment. Character will always matter more than social position.

10. Marrying for Sexual Satisfaction Alone

Sex is God’s gift within marriage, but it is only one aspect of a lifelong relationship.

Marriage also requires sacrifice, forgiveness, communication, financial responsibility, patience, and spiritual unity.

Couples who marry mainly for sexual attraction often struggle once the excitement fades. This can start even immediately after honeymoon period. If not so, as people stay together, time will try this. That is why separation, divorce and remarrying sometimes crop in.

11. Marrying Because of Age

Some people panic when they reach a certain age and believe they must marry immediately. They feel that they are being late to raise children and enjoy marriage union.

Age should never become the driving force behind such a lifelong decision. It is far better to marry wisely at the right time than hastily because of fear.

12. Marrying to Please Other People

Some individuals marry because parents approve, church members encourage it, or friends think the relationship is perfect. Ultimately, it is the couple, not the parents or friends, who will live together every day.

Marriage decisions should be guided by wisdom, prayer, and personal conviction.

13. Marrying to Cover Sin or Shame

Sometimes people marry quickly to hide mistakes, avoid embarrassment, or protect their public image especially when the girl is pregnant or in some tribes after one breaks virginity and don’t want to be exposed by the next spouse.

While God forgives every repentant sinner, marriage should never be used as a cover-up sin. A healthy marriage begins with honesty rather than fear.

14. Marrying Without Seeking God’s Guidance

One of the greatest mistakes is making such an important decision without prayer or seeking God’s direction.

God sees what human beings cannot see. He knows the future, the character of every person, and the path that leads to peace.

The Bible says: “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” — Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV)

Conclusion

Marriage is not merely a wedding ceremony or a legal agreement. It is a sacred covenant established by God. The reasons behind entering marriage often determine the strength of the relationship that follows.

Choosing a spouse because of money, beauty, pressure, loneliness, or fear can lead to lasting regret. But choosing marriage prayerfully, wisely, and according to God’s principles provides a solid foundation for a lifelong union.

Take time before saying “I do.” Pray sincerely. Seek wise counsel. Examine your motives. Above all, allow God to direct your path, for His wisdom never fails. Marry for the right reasons.
