What Is Consecration?
Consecration is one of the most important yet often overlooked principles of the Christian life. While salvation brings us into God’s family, consecration prepares us for a life of intimacy with Him and effectiveness in His service.
To consecrate means to dedicate, sanctify, devote, or set apart for God’s sacred purposes. It is the deliberate decision to separate ourselves from sin, worldly influences, selfish ambitions, and anything that competes with God’s will, so that we may belong completely to Him.
Throughout Scripture, God consecrated people, priests, kings, prophets, altars, vessels, and even entire nations for His purposes. Every person whom God used mightily first experienced a life of separation unto Him.
Consecration is far more than avoiding sinful behavior. It is the continual surrender of every area of life—our thoughts, desires, possessions, relationships, and ambitions—to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
In many ways, consecration is the bridge between salvation and spiritual usefulness. Many people receive Christ as Savior, but those who continually consecrate themselves become powerful instruments in God’s hands.
The Christian journey is therefore a journey of increasing surrender. As believers grow spiritually, God calls them into deeper levels of consecration.
Level One: Consecration of Salvation
Giving Your Life to Christ
Every journey begins with salvation. Before anyone can be set apart for God, they must first belong to Him through faith in Jesus Christ.
“And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.” ~ 2 Corinthians 5:15 (KJV)
This first level involves genuine repentance from sin, receiving Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, turning away from the kingdom of darkness, and becoming part of God’s family.
Without salvation, every other form of consecration becomes merely a religious effort. True consecration begins with a transformed heart.
Level Two: Consecration of the Body
Surrendering the Physical Life
Once we belong to Christ, He calls us to honor Him with our bodies.
“Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you?” ~ 1 Corinthians 6:19 (KJV)
Our bodies are no longer our own but God’s dwelling place. This level of consecration includes living in sexual purity, maintaining holy conduct, caring for our physical health, and avoiding habits that dishonor God.
A consecrated believer chooses to use every part of the body—including the eyes, ears, tongue, hands, and feet for righteousness rather than sin.
Level Three: Consecration of the Mind
Surrendering Thoughts and Reasoning
Transformation begins from within.
“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.” ~ Romans 12:2 (KJV)
God desires to reshape the way His children think. Worldly thinking must give way to biblical thinking. Wrong patterns of thought are replaced by the truth of God’s Word, and human reasoning submits to divine wisdom.
As the mind is renewed, believers become better able to discern God’s will and make decisions that honor Him.
Level Four: Consecration of the Heart
Surrendering Desires and Affections
God is not interested only in outward actions; He also examines the condition of the heart.
“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” ~ Proverbs 4:23 (KJV)
This level addresses our motives, desires, emotions, and priorities. Bitterness is replaced with forgiveness. Pride gives way to humility. Selfish ambition is exchanged for a passion to please God.
Instead of serving God merely out of obligation, the believer develops a genuine love for Him that becomes the motivation for obedience.
Level Five: Consecration of Time and Possessions
Surrendering Every Resource
Consecration is demonstrated by how we manage what God has entrusted to us.
“For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” ~ Matthew 6:21 (KJV)
Our time, finances, talents, spiritual gifts, abilities, and material possessions all belong to God. We are not owners but faithful stewards.
At this stage, believers willingly place every resource at God’s disposal, seeking to glorify Him in every aspect of life.
Level Six: Consecration of Purpose and Calling
Surrendering Personal Ambitions
God not only desires our resources—He desires our future.
“Not my will, but thine, be done.” ~ Luke 22:42 (KJV)
Many believers faithfully serve God until His plans conflict with their own. This level requires surrendering personal ambitions in exchange for God’s purpose.
Here, God’s assignment becomes more important than personal comfort, recognition, or convenience. Obedience becomes the guiding principle of life, even when it requires sacrifice.
This is often one of the greatest tests of consecration because it demands complete trust in God’s wisdom and timing.
Level Seven: Consecration of the Entire Life
Total Surrender to God
The highest level of consecration is complete surrender.
“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me.” ~ Galatians 2:20 (KJV)
At this stage, every area of life is under the Lordship of Christ. There are no hidden compartments reserved for self. Every decision, relationship, possession, dream, and ambition is yielded to God.
The believer no longer asks, “What do I want?” but rather, “What does God desire?”
This level was demonstrated by faithful servants such as Abraham, Moses, Paul, and perfectly fulfilled in the life of Jesus Christ, who completely submitted Himself to the Father’s will.
The Reward of a Consecrated Life
Consecration is not about losing freedom—it is about becoming fully available to God. The deeper our surrender, the greater our intimacy with Him, our sensitivity to His voice, and our usefulness in His Kingdom.
God entrusts greater responsibility to those who faithfully yield themselves to Him. Throughout Scripture, those who walked in deep consecration experienced extraordinary manifestations of God’s presence, power, and purpose.
Final Thoughts
Consecration is not a single decision made once in a lifetime. It is a daily lifestyle of continually yielding more of ourselves to God. Every season of spiritual growth invites us into deeper surrender.
The ultimate goal of consecration is that Christ may be fully formed within us and fully revealed through us. As we surrender every area of our lives to God, we become living testimonies of His grace, holiness, and power, bringing glory to His name in all that we do.
