Key Scripture
“Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings.” — Psalm 17:8 (KJV)
There are moments in life when we feel vulnerable. The pressures of life, unexpected challenges, and spiritual battles can leave us longing for a place of safety. In Psalm 17, David understood this feeling. Surrounded by enemies and facing danger, he did not place his confidence in his own strength or military ability. Instead, he cried out to God, saying, “Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings.”
The phrase “the apple of the eye” refers to the pupil, one of the most delicate and carefully protected parts of the human body. Without conscious effort, our eyes blink and our hands instinctively move to protect them from harm. David was asking God to guard him with that same tender, constant, and personal care. What a comforting thought! God watches over His children with unfailing love. We are precious in His sight, and nothing escapes His attention.
David also prayed to be hidden under the shadow of God’s wings. This beautiful picture reminds us of a mother bird gathering her young beneath her wings when danger approaches. The chicks may not understand the threat, but they are completely safe because they are close to their mother. In the same way, God invites us to find refuge in His presence. The safest place for any believer is not where there are no storms, but where God is near.
Being under God’s wings does not mean we will never face trials. David still had enemies. We also live in a world filled with uncertainty, temptation, sickness, and hardship. Yet God’s presence gives us peace in the middle of life’s storms. His protection is greater than any danger we face, and His love is stronger than any fear that tries to overwhelm us.
If you are feeling anxious today, remember that you are not facing your battles alone. The God who created heaven and earth watches over you with the care of a loving Father. He knows your struggles, sees your tears, and understands your fears. Rest in the assurance that you are precious to Him. He is your refuge, your defender, and your safe place.
No matter what today brings, remain close to the Lord. Under the shadow of His wings you will find comfort, strength, and peace that the world cannot give.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me so deeply and watching over me with such tender care. Thank You for being my refuge when I am afraid and my shelter in every storm. Keep me close to You, guard my life, and help me to rest in the confidence that I am safe in Your hands. Teach me to trust You completely, knowing that nothing can separate me from Your loving care. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
